7 Quick Takes Friday (vol. 12)

— 1 —

I’ve been living in coldville for the last 7 days, so my first few 7QT’s are going to be tips I picked up in my excessive Googling about coping with a cold and at home cold remedies.

(Feeling MUCH better today, by the way. Thank you, Lord.)

Cold Tip 1: Use an extra tissue box for a trash can for your used tissues. But where do I get an empty tissue box? If you are asking this question, you probably don’t have a need for this extra tissue receptacle near your bed/couch/etc.

Cold Tip 2: Eat peppermint ginger candy to ease a sore throat. I normally eat this stuff for motion sickness in cars, on trains, on planes, etc. But I was looking for home remedies for a sore throat in a panic this past weekend when my doctor’s office was closed because of the holiday weekend, and stumbled across a crunchy blog that recommended making a peppermint and ginger tea for relief. I didn’t have any fresh ginger or ginger tea, but I did have some ginger chewy candies. They’re kind of like a chewier gummy bear. The ginger is the dominant flavor in this candy, and the spiciness was either just a good distraction or actually did soothe my throat a little.

Cold Tip 3: Use a movie buddy in bed, so you can sleep sitting up. Most people would probably call this a “reclining pillow” or a “back pillow” (if you are Google-ing to purchase), but my husband and I lovingly refer to these pillows as “movie buddies.” While we were dating, when we would watch movies in the living room at his parents house, we would lay on the floor, each set up with one of these pillows. We pretty much only used them when watching movies, which is how they earned the nickname. After we moved into our house, his Mom and Dad gave us each our own movie buddy for our new home.

Back to the point of including the movie buddy in this post…sleeping laying down is next to impossible when you have a cold or any type of chest congestion. It leads to coughing and what feels to me like choking on air. (I’m trying not to be dramatic, really.) Anyway, this pillow has totally allowed me to continue sleeping in bed instead of sitting straight up in a chair. Much more comfortable.

What are your best “things to do when you have a cold” tips?

I’m not sure if it is still on the air or if the Game Show Network is just airing reruns, but last weekend Mark and I played our own version of The Newlywed Game while watching it on tv. They asked questions like:

  • What one item of his clothing would you throw away?
  • Where would you be most uncomfortable being romantic…the beach, your parents house, or in the car?
  • What would your wife’s name be if her first name was the name of her tallest friend, and her last name was a food that you hate? (Ashley Mushroom, btw)
  • What is something your spouse isn’t good at?

Thanks to the magic of our DVR, we paused it and wrote down our answers, and then revealed them to each other after listening to the contestants. It was hilarious, and would be really fun to do with a few other couples.

I really enjoy books that offer concrete, practical steps you can take to strengthen your faith. One such book I had the pleasure to read recently is Rediscover Catholicism by Matthew Kelly. Check out my post on one of the cool things you can do before Mass each week to help yourself grow into a better version of you!

As part of my visit to coldville, I watched lots of movies on the couch. A couple of them surprised me by demonstrating the value/importance of family life for children. I didn’t expect that, especially from The Switch, which was about a single woman who chose artificial insemination to become a mother. I expected it to glamorize her choice, but it did the opposite. This app called “Days” looks kind of awesome. Has anyone tried it? You can use it to create animated gifs and also to capture pictures in chronological order, so you have a timeline of a particular day. I think this kind of thing would be useful for scrapbookers, even if only used as a reference tool. I know sometimes it is years before people get around to scrapbooking certain events. I think I’ll check it out and give you the scoop after testing it.
