Will you just get over it already?

Few things burn me up more than unsolicited advice to “just get over it” when I’m upset or angry. Nine times out of ten, it would be in my best interest to do so, but it is still very annoying to hear.

It has taken me a while to accept that “getting over it” doesn’t have to depend on a tidy resolution to my issue or the offending party’s ability or willingness to apologize.

It is a choice I can make.

In a recent Bible study, I read the passage below with forgiveness and overcoming anger in mind.

“Oh, that today you would hear his voice, Harden not your hearts…” Hebrews 3:7-8

Reflecting on this and praying about it has been especially helpful in my quest to get over the “its” life has thrown my way. I try to visualize my heart literally transforming from stone to soft tissue and eventually the anger melts away and I can see the situation for what it really is – temporary. When I’m upset with a particular person, I imagine myself hugging him or her. My primary love language is touch, so even just the thought of giving someone a hug serves the purpose of softening my heart.

Dwelling on catastrophes, hurts and even minor inconveniences will only stand in the way of keeping our focus on what counts, loving and serving others. I know it is MUCH easier said than done, but getting over it is definitely worth a shot.

What techniques do you use to “get over it” when you’re mad or upset?
