Your Lipstick Makes Me Uncomfortable

“Where lipstick is concerned, the important thing is not color, but to accept God’s final word on where your lips end.” -Jerry Seinfeld

We all know her. The woman who refuses to accept where her real lip ends and the rest of her face begins. Her lip liner extends well beyond her lips, and she colors in between the lines with her favorite shade of lipstick or worse, clear lip gloss.

It is nearly impossible for me to take her seriously because all I can picture while looking at her is my 4 year old sister coloring on her face after sneakily lifting Mom’s lipstick from her purse.

Being around her makes me uncomfortable and her “artwork” leads me to believe she is uncomfortable with herself. Over the past few months I’ve seen women apply this technique in increasing numbers. Maybe it is the latest in lip fashion and I’m in the dark. I just don’t like it.

What make up techniques make you uncomfortable to look at or even wear? I have a tough time wearing bold lip colors, though I always admire deep red and plum shades on other women. I’m stuck in a Bamboo Pink rut.

  1. I couldn’t agree more. It makes me question a persons professionalism when their lipstick is bold or messy. I understand making a statement but you have to think about what statement you’re making. If I’m so distracted by someone’s lips how am I getting the message they are actually saying? But I do love the women that can pull it off, it makes them seem put together and in charge.

You make a great point, Tori. Before applying lipstick, we should first ask ourselves if the application method and color will detract from our ability to communicate effectively and whether or not it is appropriate for the setting.
