I haven’t written one of these in a while, so I have some catching up to do…let’s start with some of the most exciting news EVER. My oldest baby sister is engaged!!!! We are all so happy for her and her awesome fiancé, Phillip. We went on a trip together to Door County, Wisconsin shortly after they were engaged. It was fun to celebrate and discuss their future wedding!!
Please forgive me for sharing this crushing news, but I need you to know there is no such thing as white chocolate. This blew my mind. And disappointed me. I prefer dark chocolate anyway. Still, it was like “Santa isn’t real” 2.o.
What else have they been lying to us about?!
What’s with all the attacks on women lately? I really enjoyed Anne-Marie Slaughter’s article, “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All,” but it appears I’m in the minority.
Hilary Clinton recently said…
“I can’t stand whining,” Clinton told Marie Claire. “I can’t stand the kind of paralysis that some people fall into because they’re not happy with the choices they’ve made. You live in a time when there are endless choices. … Money certainly helps, and having that kind of financial privilege goes a long way, but you don’t even have to have money for it. But you have to work on yourself. … Do something!”
…which I think is despicable. Whining?? Money has everything to do with why many women do or don’t choose to stay home with their children. I know MANY women who would much rather be raising their children full-time than working outside the home, but they don’t have the option to do otherwise.
Marie Claire noted…
“We want to make it clear that Secretary Clinton’s specific comments about ‘whining’ were not in reference to Anne-Marie Slaughter but, as noted in the story, part of a larger conversation about women in the workplace and striking a work-life balance.”
I’m not buying what they’re selling.
Then there is the recent article on theatlantic.com. These are just some of the outlandish phrases found in the article. Out of context, yes, but still ridiculous.
“Being a mother isn’t a real job — and the men who run the world know it.”
Wow. That is all I can say here.
“Let’s please be serious grown-ups: real feminists don’t depend on men. Real feminists earn a living, have money and means of their own.”
By this author’s point – any woman who is a house wife or SAHM isn’t a real feminist? This position only acknowledges women who fit into the author’s neat box of what a feminist is. It scoffs at women who choose anything other than building a career, which seems a lot like a whole new form of discrimination to me.
“Did Romney actually tell his wife that her job was more important than his? So condescending. If he thought that, he’d be doing it.”
This ignores the fact that being a mother is something unique and exclusive to a woman. A man can stay home with his children, yes, but he can’t be a mother. Also, by the logic the author presents, you can’t ever acknowledge that one job may be more important than the one you currently hold, or else you’d quit your current job to pursue the more important one. *frustrated sigh* Makes no sense.
Did it ever occur to the author that Mitt Romney knew his wife was better suited to care for their children than he would’ve been?

I really enjoy carving pumpkins, but I dislike the mess that comes with it. Also, it is a lot of work. This year, I decided to carve a mini pumpkin. It was so enjoyable, I think I’ll do this every year! It was so small I could carve it on a little plate. (I included the nail polish bottle for scale.)
I know it is juvenile, but I named him. Meet Pumpkie.

My cousin Ben got married last weekend, so we traveled to Indy for the occasion. It was a beautiful ceremony and a fun reception. It was a little weird seeing my younger cousin get married. I still think of him as a little four year old kid that I pulled around in a train-shaped wagon. LOL. Of course, my family danced it up. Check out my youngest sister, Madison, dancing with the newlyweds…
This is the first weekend in 4 weeks that Mark and I will be home. We are looking forward to a lot of R&R. What are your weekend plans?

That pumpkin is adorable. My older children like to carve pumpkins but only because they love to roast the seeds.
Thanks, Jenny! That was one downside to the tiny pumpkin. There were only 15-20 seeds total.
Oh my gosh – Wurtzel’s poorly written, rambling diatribe made me so angry! Her issue with Romney’s comment about his wife’s job being more important actually hurts feminism, I think. I’m guessing she’d have a fit if he had said HIS job was more important, so the takeway Wurtzel leaves readers with is that feminism = guys can’t win. Guess I’m in the minority too, because I have to agree with Slaughter.
Anyways, hope you and Mark had a relaxing weekend at home!
I totally agree, Terri. It’s like the main stream feminist movement isn’t simply pushing for equality anymore. It is trying to turn women into men and condemn anyone who points out the inherent differences between men and women. And then they try to paint the real men as jerks. No, thank you!!
We had a good, low-key weekend. Hope you guys did, too. 🙂
