Last week at Mass my husband and I sat behind a family with five children. Anyone who knows me well can tell you this is the size of my dream family.
Although I aspire to have a large family, I’m not 100% convinced it is possible to take five kids under ten anywhere in public without major chaos, let alone a place that requires them to sit still and be quiet for well over an hour.
Much to my surprise, they were extremely well behaved. Probably better behaved than I was, seeing as how I was focusing on them half the time instead of Mass. (Kudos to their parents for raising such wonderful kids.)
They were more than just well behaved, they were joyful. They sang their hearts out to the hymns and giggled and smiled from ear to ear when the priest sprinkled our section of pews with holy water to commemorate Jesus’ baptism.
The joy each one of those children exhibited in worship reminded me that we are supposed to delight in the Lord.
“Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4
Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the seriousness of faith. Of course, it is a serious matter because our eternal lives depend on it, but it is also something to celebrate. God loves us, and I can’t think of any greater cause for joy than that.
What ways do you delight in the Lord?
