If you’re new to the blog, be sure to start with Part 1 of our love story.
The school year wrapped up and I headed up to Chicago to live with my Aunt and start my super exciting internship. The first week I was in town I called my future boss as instructed to set up a time for orientation. I called him and he didn’t answer the phone, so I left a voice mail. When he got back to me, he told me he had given the position to an upperclassmen that needed the internship credits to graduate.
Of course he did.
I relocated to a new city and my aunt rearranged her life to let me move in with her, and now I had no job. I applied for every job I could find and within a few weeks accepted a position as a loan originator for a mortgage company. I worked from 3-9PM every day. Because I was in an unfamiliar town, the only friends I had were my aunt and my 9 year old cousin. I had a lot of spare time in the mornings, so I started looking for another job.
My Aunt, God bless her for all she did, helped me get a part-time position as an intern at her company doing data entry work. I worked there from 8AM-2:30PM three days a week, and then went to my other job from 3-9PM. They were long days, but I made bank that summer. That college tuition wasn’t going to pay itself!
On the first day of work in my aunt’s office, I met Mark during new hire orientation. I was very nervous the first time I met him, but admittedly it had more to do with starting my first internship than his presence.
I (sadly) don’t remember our first words to each other, but I’ll never forget a conversation we had that first day. It was about marijuana on college campuses. You know, the stuff love stories are made of.
I learned that afternoon that Mark’s uncle worked with my aunt, and he helped him get the job there. Our love story was truly a family affair!
