Our first month as puppy parents

My husband and I have talked about getting a puppy since before we were married. We have almost adopted a dog or puppy a few times, but it never panned out. With both of us working full-time, commuting 45 minutes each way to work, we always ended up feeling bad about having to leave a dog home alone so much. There are some days we’d be gone for 14+ hours.

Fast forward to today…we’re both working from home. It seemed like the time was right, so we decided to get a puppy to celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary! We submitted an application for a few different puppies. Then my Mom told me about a golden retriever at a farm about an hour away who was ready to be adopted immediately. We decided to go meet her.

This is the photo the farmer sent me when I sent him a text in response to the advertisement.

Of course once we met her, there was no turning back! We named her Arwen, after one of our favorite characters from The Lord of the Rings. She even has her own emoji! Try it, just type in Arwen on your phone. 🧝‍♀️

She is so sweet and snuggly and loves being held. That is what made us choose her over one of the other puppies. We are big time snugglers in our family. (Also how she got her nickname and hashtag #arwenthesnuggly.) More evidence of her snuggly nature…

I love snuggling her just as much as she likes to be snuggled. Our vet pointed out that I need to give her some space or she is going to get really bad separation anxiety if we’re ever apart. As if snuggling her until she falls asleep each night is crossing the line! But I’m working on it, with a lot of encouragement from Mark. 😉

The first couple weeks were challenging as we adjusted to waking up several times a night to take her outside for bathroom breaks. We are used to sleeping 9+ uninterrupted hours a night and haven’t been broken of that by children yet, so it was a rude awakening.

She also had a parasite and swallowed part of a plastic spoon as she was taking her medicine (to kill the parasite), so that was a terrifying adventure, waiting and praying for it to come out the other end. Praise God it did and she is fine. Big thanks to my Mom for helping us navigate that!

During week days, Arwen goes back and forth between our two offices.

It’s an understatement to say I love her and am so happy we added her to our family. I don’t think I’m at all biased when I say she’s the sweetest most amazing puppy in the whole world.😁

Arwen’s favorite spot to chill in the living room is between the glass of the coffee table.
